I give up.

As of right now, i am officially done with any and all political videos. i think what sent me over the edge was the late show clip, currently on the first page of the top sifts of all time. i know this is a big election, but i didnt come here for any kind of political views or entertainment or lies or whatever. i came to see a cat playing piano, or some idiot find a way to hit himself in the head, or a beautiful song played by an amateur, or the latest Zero Punctuation. all this political crap is kinda crowding me.

[tumbleweed goes by]

I just noticed that the current top 15 is all election-related videos. It's been mostly election stuff for a while now, but this if the first time I've seen it that it's been completely election08 [edit: I just noticed that there are a couple of non-election videos in there. I'm stupid].

Dignant: Just grin and bare it, the election is right around the corner (sort of). I've been super-busy for the last little while, so I'm just glad to see that, as Canuck who is pretty apathetic as far as political stuff goes, I'm not missing much.

Sarzy says...

Right, I forgot that this was a news site. Oh wait...

I guess what irks me (and others, I gather) about the current state of events on the site is that this is supposed to be a general interest type of place. I like music videos, but I'd get bored if people predominantly posted music videos. I like comedy sketches, but I'd get bored if people predominantly posted comedy sketches. I like cute animal videos, but I'd get bored if people predominantly posted cute animal videos. See where I'm going here?

I think what a lot of people like about this site is being able to peruse the front page (including the top 15) and see a variety of interesting videos, something which is a bit tough to do right now unless you're a news junkie. It seems like Videosift is more and more becoming "the Daily Show: the online experience".

But of course, no one person can control the content on this site -- that's one of the great things about it -- so if everyone wants political videos, well that that's what we're going to get. I just hope it doesn't become a self-perpetuating cycle, which eventually scares away all the non-newsy people and attracts nothing but news junkies, turning this site into a permanent news-centric destination.

Well, I have about 30 or 40 vids planned for sifting and all of them have zero to do with the election. My forte is movies anyway, so that's what I'm going to stick with.

Your forte might be cooking shows on TV. Cat and dog videos are always popular and there's even been a butt-load of chess videos, for chrissakes. Chess videos!!

My point is that there's plenty of variety on the sift and there's no law that says you must only watch the top 15. Check out 'Unsifted' once in a while.

I'm not a big fan of politic(ian)s either, but the market dictates demand, and so it is in an election cycle.

I for one use the sift to stay updated, but as Sarzy said, the fact that no one person controls this site really allows one to be exposed to a diverse array of videos from users with many differing viewpoints and interests.

sarzy pretty much hit the nail on the head. MGR, i totally agree with you about how important this is, but this is not the place i want to hear about it.

edit: by the way, KOMMIE, i'm an american, so it's my election too.

gourmetemu says...

As the poster of the video that currently sits a top the voting, let me say. I actually agree. If you look through my videos I think I only have one other election related vid. And you'll rarely find one in my voting history. I generally found that clip entertaining, and I sift videos in the hopes that others find them entertaining as well. In this case I guess it just hit at a time when people are particularly passionate about certain things.

This is definitely a temporary thing. Just two months ago, I thought people had finally reached a saturation level with the election, but it turned out it was just a lull in people's interest between the end of the primaries in June, and the conventions in August.

The minute the conventions started, politics was hot here, and it's stayed hot ever since. I suspect it will stay hot until Nov 4th, and then drop off after that.

Personally, I'm likely to stay interested, and keep posting political videos, though not nearly at the rate I've been going at. I suspect the Top 15 will pretty quickly return to a more diverse composition a week or two after the election, with flare ups possible if Bush invades Iran in December, or the global economy collapses, or aliens land in the Rose Garden.

jwray says...

The change from the chronological default on the front page to a "hotness" default has caused some reduction in diversity. Whatever isn't on top is even more likely to be ignored now.

Pinky you get a *quality from this Texas man when he recharges:
All the arguments and justifications above speak only one, undeniable fact for me:

MOST people are too fucking robotic to one have a semi-conscious thought one, that has not been filtered through the rusted, porous filter of mass media. The popularity and diversion created by the machine, the political fandom in the minds of the collective mass a' monkeys while simultaneously disregarding the obvious shit in need of complete retrofit, well.......buncha monkeys, what more can one say......

I gave up putting up with bullshit a while back......

choggie says...

oh and , gorillaman T' quote yas....

"It bothers me that videos that won't have any meaning in a few years will still be on the site with >100 votes.

Purge all election '08 videos after the election."

I will be sure to press this issue and demand a motherfucking vote concerning the same, when the time comes, because shit, is something to be disposed of and dealt with to insure that basic health and wellness be maintained.....

Perhaps we can place them all in a special corner, rather than having folks simply "FILTER" the shit........which is preposterous and passive, and exhibits no more of a backbone than a fucking snail......Filter this, bitches!!!!

NordlichReiter says...

What important with the election is that you dont get fraud.

I expect there to be fraud in my state, that's why you should all go to the polling places and take their trash, and look for the receipts that they toss in the trash.

gwiz665 says...

I'd rather be inclusive than exclusive. I don't come here just to see a cat playing a piano, dumbasses of the day or "amateur" ukulele players. I come as much for this, this and to get updates on the election. Hell, I use videosift as a news site - it's more unbiased than most regular news programs.

MrFisk says...

I enjoy the politics. I also enjoy comedy, disturbing cinema scenes, obscure music (primarily rap), chess (I'm responsible and I plan on bringing more opening, tactical, and end game strategy vids soon), cooking how to, and documentaries.
If you made it through the Democratic primary, the next 40 odd days will be a fucking cinch. I feel that Bush was so wretched, and that the media was so inept after 9/11, that the saturation of political videos was, and is, inevitable.

joedirt says...

ZOMG@! digg.com is all election crap. Even news.google is in on the conspiracy to ruin your feline fancy.

Um, filter bitch instead of GBCW.

You know I WISH (seriously wish) I could filter out inane yet-another-cat-knocking-over-dominos videos. There is no filter for that.

joedirt says...

WTF. did someone hack his acct, I seem complete sentences, with punctuation,

I enjoy the plethora of election videos because I've become a political junkie of late, but this is a sound complaint -- Why not have a section of the site devoted to a more diverse top videos listing? Maybe a "Diverse" tab on the main page which acts much like the "Hotness" tab but devalues a video based on how many videos above it are in the same channels. That way if one channel is overrepresented videos beyond the top two or three will be pushed off the first couple pages, making room for other kinds of videos.

On the other hand, it didn't look to me like Top Sifts is dominated by political videos; maybe it already does something like this?

Ryjkyj says...

I give up too.

There are entirely to many videos on this site. I come here for the neat-o-rama links and to look at peoples avatars.

Maybe we should think about banning videos until I can memorize neat-o-rama's web address and learn to use flickr.

Does anyone know if there's a button somewhere that I could just press?

rottenseed says...

this election has everything that it's replacing on the sift anyway:

Comedy: Sarah Palin
Fear: Sarah Palin
Dark: Barack Obama (had to...I fucking had to, OK?!)
Vintage: John McCain
Kids: Sarah Palin's compound
Cute: Sarah Palin trying to answer real political questions

what else do you want?
