The Geek Rapture (Blog Entry by dag)
^yeah, leave it to Farhad to provide us with a true downer...

'oh no a couple of baby birds died!'
'150 people were just murder in a hotel in India because a group of men thought they represented the modern world's disregard for traditional values'
'okay, you win'

Oh, but the real comment I was going to make concerns this sentence:

"Compassion, mercy and real altruism are human perversions that don't fit into the natural world."

Well, there are some people who would argue against that. Without delving into the details (I'm going to bed), I'll just mention that E. O. Wilson has been getting a lot of press lately about a book he has produced which outlines 'the super-organism', the colony of individuals so entirely devoted to their communal objective that they frequently seem to act with no individual self interest. Beyond that there are tons of anecdotal situations where mother animals adopt unrelated or barely related orphans, etc., etc., and there are all sorts of horrible things humans do to each other and to animals (killing them for fun, for instance).

Life is pretty dern complicated.

Obama Civil Defense Plan - Mandatory Civil Service
not a big fan of the idea, but its not worth getting upset about a vague idea.

there were absolutely no specifics given except an age range and a 3-4 month time period tossed out there, so until we know what the goals of the venture are, who the exceptions are (women?), etc. etc., i'm not even the slightest bit concerned.

that said, i have a friend from germany and a friend from syria who did mandatory military positions when they were around 18-20 years old, and they both have fun stories about it. certainly wasn't something they regret.

Smaller, quieter, safer wind turbine design
Mr. Beer Belly noted that these turbines do not rotate as quickly at maximum speed (2.5 times the speed of wind was his quote), and thus are still visible to birds/bats when its dark and windy, indicating that the problem is the propeller turbines actually spin so fast that birds don't see to avoid the blades.

But anyway.. how is that new style friendlier to birds? It probably has more area in which to hit a bird, and if the bird goes through one side of the turbine it then has to go through the other side.

You of course understand the presence of the word "wind" in "wind farm"? As in, when there's wind, they "farm" it.
