I think he first passed out because he wasn't breathing while he was chugging...
I think you're right on the money there. Not breathing while drinking = faster absorption of alcohol (I believe). Maybe he didn't eat either. Maybe he had a drink before as well. But there's a euphoric effect to holding your breath and getting alcohol in your system.
