You're sounding like an old man trying to justify away your inhibitions.:P
Movies like this are a 14-year old fantacy. It's a delve into all that is comic book cool. Super power invincibility, Cyberpunk, Steam Punk, Mech-Warriors, Martial Arts, Sci-Fi, Ancient Wisdom, Fighting for your life, Frailty, Wisdom, Sensuality, Sacrifice, Cute girls, Fantasy, Thoughts within thoughts and so much more. Like the ogre said, "The onion has layers!"
"Let's have hot chicks! with guns! fighting samurai! with more guns! and dragons!" - YES, Lets!
If you go into this movie, leave behind your common-sense brain and take with you, your fourteen-year-old brain. If you expect reality, you're watching the wrong movie!

while there's no doubting Snyders technical skill, he really has no original ideas at all. This movie played like it was written by a 14 year old boy. Let's have hot chicks! with guns! fighting samurai! with more guns! and dragons!
Honestly, I went into it expecting mindless fun, so my standards weren't high. But not only was it boring, it was downright creepy, like watching an old man hit on a teenage girl.
edit: actually while I'm on this soapbox.... the costumes on the lead actress were borderline paedophilia. And she was rubbish.

The merits of hot chicks (babydolls creepiness aside) fighting dragons, steampunk nazis, etc are lost on me. Which was why it was so surprising that the whole thing was boring at best and lurid at worst.

Even watching the action sequences, you're aware that what you're actually watching is a fantasy within a fantasy. At one layer removed you are watching women forced into sex slavery and "reality" is not much better.

If you wanted to make a straight up action movie, with awesome set-pieces and a ridiculous plot, go for it. But what plot there was made the whole thing feel seedy.

I tried, believe me. I went with a bunch of mates. We had beer and ribs beforehand. And we still came out genuinely wondering if Snyder was that stupid.

Or maybe not...

and here is really the only excuse I can give this. Maybe it's meant to be creepy and weird. There's a infinitesimal chance that there is actually a meta-narrative, that the whole thing is a work of subversive genius; a commentary on how comfortable we are with fetishizing things that are in many ways genuinely wrong.

But somehow, I doubt it.

I feel guilty getting a sort of vindication that (some) police officers feel like they're invincible. Its clearly the police officer's fault here as they others were in the middle of closed shoot.

Sorry to hear about the divorce. That's rough enough when you do it in the same city, let alone a different country.

And I know what you mean about the fortress. I'm realizing now, more than any other time in my life, how important friends are.

What bugs me about the Jesse thing is...that I can't even believe the point is being argued.

Would the "she deserved it" people have sex with her if she offered it? Would they have sex with any eleven-year-old if they offered it? If no, why? Because it's illegal? Okay, if it were legal, would you have sex with an eleven-year-old?

See where I'm going here? If she's not old enough to be held responsible for making the decision to have sex, how is it that she's old enough to suffer the consequences of getting on the internet and espousing some bravado? "A brain slushie?" God, there are film school graduates who couldn't have dreamed that one up. Or maybe they did and, just like a stupid kid, she merely repeated what she heard.

But no, instead of just turning her off and ignoring her, let's get her personal info and make her and her family's life a living hell.

It's her own fault. She deserved it.

Most of the perpetrators of the mobbing were white, middle-class, suburban males, and it disturbs me deeply to see how many of them insist that she deserved it.

Sorry for the rant.

In reply to this comment by chtierna:
Shit man, I'm sorry about what happend to you, I don't know what you went through exactly, but I think I can relate in at least one way, namely:

When I was younger I thought I was this fortress, invincible against other peoples opinions etc. Then I got married in another country and now divorced and I realized that I depend on others just as much as anyone else and that I'm fragile in ways that I think everyone is but don't know they are. It was a scary realization and I started doubting myself in ways I'd never done before.

I think everyone needs to be able to cut stuff off at a certain level and just have somewhere they can lick their wounds and build themselves up, but when you're in a situation with no escape then the damage starts to really fuck you up, like it did me here, and probably you too.

I also think many people never ever had to face what it is to be exposed and feel like shit, or maybe they did and it's easier to deny it and join the mob to go after someone else and feel some kind of strength from that.

About going after the 4chan people that hurt others. Honestly, I think it would just feed the trolls. It would be something that other 4chan'ers would laugh at or that would take their boredom away. I dont think it would really make one iota of difference. But I see where you're coming from.

Wonder Woman looks fine as she is. The third one's by the same artist as the redesign, tell me she doesn't look ten times as awesome.

I don't know what it is with Jim Lee, does he actually do any work any more, or does he just creep around ruining iconic costumes? He even managed to screw up Invincible for about two years, just by doing one guest cover.

A 'modern sensibility' means drawing Wonder Woman as a 90s teenager? The jacket is retarded. The choker is retarded. She's somehow acquired new unique one-of-a-kind magic bracers. What about a pair of slacks says 'amazon princess'?

What it boils down to is, there is nothing unique or striking about that new costume. It will never produce a single iconic image.

I am on the internet, making an angry post about comic books.

Buying small arms in Somalia

direpickle says...

I'd guess that it's more: A weak government, proliferation of arms comparable to the government's, and the willingness and desperation of the people to use them to take what they want destabilize a country.

So: The US doesn't have violent crime because there are guns. The US has violent crime because the population of poor, disenfranchised people that think they have no other option is large. More shootings happen because these people (criminals) have access to guns. More homicides occur because a gunshot's more damaging than a stab wound (and gives more of a sense of invincibility, probably, meaning they're more willing to take the risks that lead to the situations in which they have to use them).

Of course there are also crimes of passion and psychos--and these will also likely be more fatal with firearms than without (but not necessarily--see recent string of Chinese knife-wielding maniacs). But what is the ratio of burglaries/other crimes-gone-wrong to man-kills-man-in-bed-with-his-wife or man-goes-on-sniping-spree or man-hacks-apart-school-children? Dunno, but I'd guess the first is probably the larger portion by a huge amount.

Any discussion of "Guns do X" is definitely oversimplifying the situation. You can't compare the US to Germany to Canada to Somalia purely on gun ownership, because the cultures and social security nets (and any number of other things) are different as well--ranging from "pretty cushy" to "non-existent."

Why Switzerland Has the Lowest Crime rate in the World

dannym3141 says...

Just like when Britain had national service - i believe the lower crime rate is linked to service in the military. Think of the respect and discipline it teaches a person? And also not to take things for granted, that there are consequences to acting like a dick, that they are not invincible, not tough, it teaches them teamwork and how to bond with people from all backgrounds (the people they train with).

Yeah, national service can be a very very good thing for some people.

the BUSH admin BLOCKED efforts to prevent housing crisis (Politics Talk Post)

Farhad2000 says...

It's hard to say that they 'allowed' the economic crisis to occur, there was a real sense that nothing could go wrong and that the banks basically learnt how to eliminate risk. There was a huge feeling of invincibility.

Did they let the banks do whatever they please through mass deregulation in the financial markets in much the same way Enron was allowed to play with the energy market in California?

Yes.
