VideoSift 4.0 Launch! (Sift Talk Post)

You guys have done a fantastic job with the new interface. Wonderful work!

(And xxxovercastxx, I do want to jump up and claim one of your gold stars, so that can be invincible for a few moments before falling into a pit and dying after a poorly planned jump. That power-up music went straight to my head...

...I mean, good job on the logos )

American girl flips the bird, throws drink in dudes face...

Ryjkyj says...

Looks to me like she hit her head on the conrete really hard when she fell.

I don't know about you guys but I get really tired of this hollywood invincibility image we all seem to have in our heads. She might be totally fine and I don't mean to sound like anyone's mother but a fall like that has the possibility of causing a lot more damage than most people think. A concussion not being the least.

IMO that type of physical reaction to a drink being thrown in someone's face is never justified. And yes, I would feel the same way if it was a guy. Now, we all get pissed off and for my own sake: I hope that guy AND his friends got their fucking asses handed to them.

PS: LOcky, latin culture has a very strong standard of masculinity. Not unlike New Zealand or Australian culture. And "Mexican" isn't a race.

Erik B. & Rakim - Microphone Fiend

MrFisk says...

I was a fiend before I became a teen
I melted microphone instead of cones of ice cream
Music orientated so when hip-hop was originated
Fitted like pieces of puzzles, complicated
cause I grabbed the mic and try to say, yes y'all!
They tried to take it, and say that I'm too small
Cool, cause I don't get upset
I kick a hole in the speaker, pull the plug, then I jet
Back to the lab ...without a mic to grab
So then I add all the rhymes I had
One after the other one, then I make another one
To dis the opposite then ask if the brothers done
I get a craving like I fiend for nicotine
But I don't need a cigarette, know what I mean?
I'm raging, ripping up the stage and
Don't it sound amazing cause every rhyme is made and
Thought of, cuz its sort of...an addiction,
Magnatized by the mixing
Vocals, vocabulary, your verses, you're stuck in
The mic is a drano, volcanoes erupting,
Rhymes overflowing, gradually growing
Everything is written in the cold, so it can coin-
Cide, my thoughts to guide,
48 tracks to slide
The invincible, microphone fiend rakim
Spread the word, cause I'm in
E-f-f-e-c-t
A smooth operator operating correctly,
But back to the problem, I gotta habit,
You cant solve it, silly rabbit
The prescription is a hypertone thats thorough when
I fiend for a microphone like heroin
Soon as the bass kicks, I need a fix
Gimme a stage and a mic and a mix
And Ill put you in a mood or is it a state of
Unawareness? beware, its the reanamator!
A menace to a microphone, a lethal weapon
An assasinator, if the people ain't stepping
You see a part of me that you never seen
When I'm fiending for a microphone, Im the microphone fiend...

After 12, I'm worse that a gremlin
Feed me hip-hop and I start trembling
The thrill of suspense is intense, your horrified
But this ain't the cinemas of tales from the darkside,
By any means neccesary, this is what has to be done
Make way cause here I come....
My dj cuts material....
Grand imperial.
It's a must that I bust any mic youre hand to me,
Its inherited, its runs in the family
I wrote the rhyme that broke the bulls back,
If that dont slow em up, I carry a full pack.
Now I dont want to have to let off, you should of kept off
You didnt keep the stage warm, step off!
Ladies and gentleman, youre about to see
A pasttime hobby about to be
Take it to the maximum, I cant relax see, im
Hype as a hyperchrondriac cause the rap be one-
Hell of a antidote, something you cant smoke
More than dope, you're trying to move away but you cant, you're broke
More than cracked up, you should have backed up
For those who act up need to be more than smacked up
Any entertainer, I got a torture chamber
One on one and Im the remainder!
So close your eyes and hold your breath,
And I'm a hitcha wit the blow of death
Before you go, you'll remember you seen
The fiend of a microphone, I'm the microphone fiend

The Sift, Thoreau, and Civil Disobedience (Worldaffairs Talk Post)

Fjnbk says...

rougy, I'm pretty cynical. But I don't think that we've reached the point where the only thing we can do to achieve the change we want is to drop out of society. Not everyone in politics is rich and well-established. There are always the exceptions, and those exceptions can end up doing a lot. Look at Robert La Follette, or Paul Wellstone. Heck, Minnesota elected Al Franken as its Senator. Sure, the powers that be are strong, but they're not invincible.

Even if you think that it's a no-win situation, it seems a little... petty and histrionic to just up and leave. It's not going to achieve anything in terms of changing the U.S., unless there truly is a mass exodus of beyond Biblical proportions. It's more in line with slacktivism.

It is the ideal solution if you think that you're responsible for yourself alone. I'd probably move to Sweden if I thought like that. But if you feel any social responsibility, then you can't just abandon the others to the wolves. I see your point, but I don't think we should start imitating Ayn Rand novels just yet.

Christian Rock: Condoms Are Not Safe!

eric3579 says...

It's a bad situation, got the feeling inside
And you know it ain't right,
To be with her tonight

Your minds sayin' maybe,
And your hearts sayin' no
And your body's sayin'
'Hey, on the green light go'
Tell me man, how does it measure?
To risk it all for a little pleasure

Ain't no safe way anymore
You got people with one, two, three and four
Abstinence rules, playin' is for fools
The one who abstains is the one who's cool
There's no safe way

You say it can't happen, won't happen to you
And you think that your protected,
And invincible too
If you play with fire,
Then you're gonna get burned
Better change your desire,
Or the hard way you will learn

So you´d prefer Wolverine´s claws or his mutant healing?

I've always thought that Wolverine's superhealing was - by far - the best mutant power out there.
Also, the way these two acted at first reminded me of a gay couple adopting their first baby lol

Best mutant power is easily just any kind of omega-level mutant like jean or jubilee or whatever. Jubilee was meant to be one of the most powerful mutants ever, apparently limitless in power, and being omega-level supposedly makes you all but immortal. Hence jean dying doesn't necessarily mean she's dead. The phoenix rises, etc.

I realise how nerdy this looks, but after watching it yesterday on film4, i decided to read up on what exactly happened to cyclops, which led to jean, which led to omega-level mutants and to jubilee and onwards....

Honestly.

Right-wing Bets Against U.S. in Pirate Standoff

quantumushroom says...

I reject the left's outright hypocrisy, that's all. The left "hates" Glenn Beck and Fox News with nothing left over for terrorists, warlords, un-Johnny-Depp-like pirates etc., mayhaps it's part of an underplayed blame-USA-first mentality.

Claiming that "all violence" is wrong is a form of moral cowardice. Even the Dalai Lama recognizes that some wars are just. With an aquaterrorist or the other kind, the only choices are to meet their demands or kill them. Meeting terrorist demands just gets you more of the same, while meeting the threat of further escalation with overwhelming force sends a clear message not to do it again.

Was the irony that the Maersk Alabama was delivering aid to Somalia lost on the left? The nobility of doing good deeds does not make said do-gooders invincible or open the hearts of evil people. And so there are SEALS.

Some of you are missing the point. He's not insulting games that have stories. He's insulting games that focus on story or cinematic values at the expense of gameplay (which is a growing trend). The fact is that games are getting dumber and less challenging by the second. The platforming in Assassin's Creed consisted of holding down one button. The platforming, puzzles and combat in the new Prince of Persia were all dumbed down and streamlined compared to the games in the Sands of Time trilogy. Genres with steep learning curves have been or are being phased out. Western RPGs and survival horror games are now more like action games. Shooters now have regenerating health, third-person cover systems, aim assist, trajectory indicators, invincible squadmates, etc.
The sad reality is that developers are focusing on accessibility over depth, challenge and longevity. Games are becoming increasingly automated and decreasingly interactive for the sake of "cinematic immersion." Anyone who's been playing games for a while (particularly on the PC) can see the downward spiral that gaming has taken.
